Charity: Water in Rwanda

Charity: Water has unveiled their 2012 holiday campaign. “100 Wells for the Holiday” aims to raise enough money to build one hundred clean water drinking wells in Ethiopia.

The charity started in 2006 with the simple goal of bringing clean and safe drinking water to every single person on the planet. So far, they’ve funded 6994 water projects in twenty different countries.

800 million people do not have access to drinking water. Charity: Water’s projects have helped 2.7 million people get access to clean drinking water.

Why is clean drinking water so important? It’s estimated that 10% of all illnesses could be eliminated with access to clean drinking water. Diarrheal diseases are the second leading killer of children in the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, diarrheal diseases are the number one killer of children.

Economically speaking, $1 invested in water produces $4-12 for the local economy. Women and girls are freed from walking several hours each day just to collect water for the household. The time could be spent on education and income production.

This holiday season, they hope to fund the building of one hundred more wells. Each well costs about $10,000. Private donors cover the operating costs of the charity, so that 100% of your money goes to the building of the well.

You can help provide clean water to people in Ethiopia by donating to Charity: Water. Donate as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, using PayPal, credit card, or check. We’re trying to reach $10,000 by December 31.
