Back in 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created “WaterSense” as a label for high-efficiency plumbing products that not only use less water, but work as well as “conventional” fixtures like faucets, toilets, and shower heads. That means that shower heads labeled with “WaterSense” have been tested for both spray force and water coverage and achieved real-world results (example: getting shampoo out of hair) on par with more “wasteful” products that use up to 2900 more gallons of water per household each and every year!

Karen Wirth, the EPA’s WaterSense marketing and outreach coordinator, goes into more detail, explaining that, “If you take an eight-minute shower, you’ll save four gallons of water, and the amount of electricity it takes to light a 60-watt bulb for eight hours every time you shower. For the average American family, replacing just one showerhead with a WaterSense labeled model can save the amount of water it takes to wash more than 70 loads of laundry every year and enough energy to power their home for 13 days.” (!)

Showering adds up to almost 17% off all Americans’ water use. For an average family, that adds up to nearly 40 gallons per day spent showering, and over 1 trillion gallons of water used, nationwide, just for showering. If the EPA’s estimates are to be believed then, switching US homes to WaterSense shower heads would save more than 260 billion gallons of fresh water, annually. News which, you know, may be coming too late for California and Texas, but which is still good news.

You can see some of the EPA’s figures in this handy-dandy infographic, below. Enjoy!
