The underwater vehicle swam 65 feet underneath the sea ice and recorded the depths of the ice with sonar.<\/p>\n<p>With satellite data showing sea ice melting at an unprecedented rate in the <a title=\"Arctic Sea Ice Retreat \u2013 2012 Was a Record Year\" href=\"http:\/\/bluelivingideas.com\/2012\/09\/21\/arctic-sea-ice-retreat-2012-was-a-record-year\/\">Arctic<\/a>, while increasing in the <a title=\"Why Antarctic Sea Ice is Growing\" href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/2010\/11\/02\/why-antarctic-sea-ice-is-growing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctic<\/a>, the information on the thickness and shape of the ice is welcome.
