South Korea announced it would begin whaling under the same loophole that allows Japan to continue whaling.<\/p>\n

Despite the moratorium on commercial whaling that was declared in 1986, three countries still hunt whales.\u00a0 Iceland and Norway continue commercial whaling in open defiance of the moratorium.\u00a0 Japan, however, uses a loophole that allows lethal methods of scientific study and the subsequent sale of the meat for human food.<\/p>\n

At the meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Panama, South Korea announced it would also begin scientific study of whales using lethal methods.\u00a0 The United States, along with Australia and New Zealand, hope to convince their ally South Korea not to hunt whales.<\/p>\n
