The term river herring includes both alewife and blueback herring. They’re a seagoing fish that spawns in rivers.

River herring are an important source of food for many marine animals, from adorable dolphins to economically valuable commercial fish. The populations have been declining due to dams, habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing.

Now that the National Marine Fisheries Service has decided to review the status of the river herring, what next?

Over the next year, scientific studies will be conducted to figure out exactly where the population of river herring stands, as well as what a commercially viable population would be.

The worry is that the National Marine Fisheries Service will be pressured to cut corners or yield to outside pressures. The Pew Environment Group has a form to fill out and make sure your voice is heard.
