Green Cross International’s (GCI) mission is “to respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable and secure future.” Founded in 1993 as a merger between former U.S.S.R. Give earth a future.” And that’s exactly what they are giving their first schools in Ghana to be part of the Smart Water for Green Schools project. Beginning in February of 2010 they began their pilot phase with the goal of providing 67 teachers and 1,987 students across 5 communities with hygiene and sanitation education.

“Every day should be world water day. We are happy to work with Pureology to help foster a more sustainable planet. By protecting water resources we protect ourselves.” — Jean-Michel Cousteau, Green Cross France Chairman

The Smart Water project sees GCI team with Pureology Serious Colour Care. In addition to providing education, the program will encourage exchanges between schools in shared river basins. Over the next 2 years, the project plans to expand to 40 schools in the La Plata, Volta, Mekong and Jordan River Basins.

The project aims to address the growing problem of clean water availability and understanding in shared river basins. 45% of the Earth is covered by river basins shared across country lines and 40% of the world’s population lives in internationally shared river basins. Two out of five people in Africa live without adequate water for sanitation and hygiene. Education and local infrastructure creation within this program will address that in a localized way consistent with disaster response perspectives of the Red Cross model.
