Green Cross International\u2019s<\/a> (GCI) mission is \u201cto respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable and secure future.\u201d Founded in 1993 as a merger between former U.S.S.R. President Mikhail Gorbacev\u2019s idea for an organization that would apply the medical emergency response model of the International Committee of the Red Cross to ecological issues and Swiss National Council MP Roland Wiederkehr\u2019s World Green Cross, Green Cross International makes it their business to \u201cGive humanity a chance. Give earth a future.\u201d And that\u2019s exactly what they are giving their first schools in Ghana to be part of the Smart Water for Green Schools project. Beginning in February of 2010 they began their pilot phase<\/a> with the goal of providing 67 teachers and 1,987 students across 5 communities with hygiene and sanitation education.<\/p>\n
