When the EPA backed down from a lawsuit against Range Resources early last year, the reasoning wasn’t entirely clear. New facts coming to light tell a convoluted tale of lobbyists, politicians, and money distorting public health findings.
Range Resources was accused of polluting drinking water wells near Weatherford, Texas, just west of Fort Worth. Once fracking began in the area, the wells smelled of methane and the water could be lit on fire.
Range Resources denied any fault for the methane in the water supply. The EPA got involved and filed a lawsuit against Range Resources. Then rather suddenly, the EPA dropped the lawsuit without much explanation. It was recently revealed that a report showing the wells might have been polluted by Range Resources’s activities was buried shortly before the lawsuit was dropped. Why?
