Half of Kainji Dam’s power units have been shut down due to excessive water leaks.
Minister of Power Prof Bart Nnaji said the leaks could flood one of the two power stations on the dam. To prevent the flooding, the power station generating 330 megawatts was shut down late last week.
If the leaks are not stopped, Nnaji said, the other station might need to be shut down as well. The other hydropower station produces 335 megawatts.
Kainji Dam, completed in 1968, provides power to all the major cities in Nigeria and sells some power to neighboring country Niger.
