Smart Shower Up for the James Dyson Award

The Smart Shower is a multi-use, energy- and water-saving shower entered for the 2009 James Dyson Award that can be used by anyone, including less able-bodied individuals.

The Smart Shower

The designer says that the catalyst for the project was to create an “all-in-one shower enclosure that was efficient on energy” and that provided “safety and comfort for all… including myself, who may not be able to stand comfortably for long periods of time.”

The James Dyson Award is an international design award open to University level students in design or engineering from around the world. It is run by the James Dyson Foundation and the James Dyson’s charitable trust. that “celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.” In a nutshell, they ask designers to design something that solves a problem.

The smart shower if full of energy and water efficiency features.

- Shower-head utilizes aerated technology to use just 1/6 of the water that a standard shower head uses.

- Integrated heat exchanger system in the base recovers up to 50% of the water’s heat energy and feeds that back into the system.

- All components can be recycled.

Washing Clothes in the Smart Shower

Highlighted safety and usability features include the two-door system and interior safety rail for high accessibility and safety. An interior, counter-level wash basin with adjustable shower-head height enables users the option to bathe infants, wash their own hair or hand-wash clothing, and is even designed with extra foot room at the base to allow for foot room.
