Atlantic States Move to Develop Their 330 GW Off-Shore Wind Potential

Interior Secretary Salazar has joined with the governors of ten states to develop the staggering potential for offshore wind on the US Outer Continental Shelf, through a new Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium.
Last year, thorough polling of residents in five Atlantic states revealed a tremendous groundswell of support for clean offshore wind energy development in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. They have now been joined by five more neighboring states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and North Carolina, to make ten states in the group.

NY Proposes Recycling Cooling Water at Nuclear Power Plants

When one thinks of nuclear power, images of cooling towers rising into the sky come to mind. Water is needed in nuclear power production in order to cool the “waste heat” generated and in case an accident occurs. The Union of Concerned Scientists explains:
For every three units of energy produced by the reactor core of a U.S. nuclear power plants, two units are discharged to the environment as waste heat. Nuclear plants are built on the shores of lakes, rivers, and oceans because these bodies provide the large quantities of cooling water needed to handle the waste heat discharge.

Daylighting to Improve the City and the Environment

Streams and rivers can be central attractions of a city. They can be beautiful, vibrant public places where people can enjoy the company of others while also enjoying the peace and calm of nature. They can also provide peaceful and aesthetically pleasing transportation corridors for bicyclists, roller-bladers, skateboarders, pedestrians and others.
For these reasons, daylighting is becoming an increasingly popular tool among urban planners and landscape architects.

New York Gets $430 Million From EPA For Wastewater Infrastructure

The EPA has awarded the single largest grant in their history to New York State for wastewater infrastructure projects: $430 million. The funding comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and will finance municipal and county governments and wastewater utilities for projects to protect ponds, lakes, and streams in New York communities.
