David de Rothschild famously built the Plastiki out of plastic bottles and sailed it from California to the fabled Pacific Garbage Patch. The journey took months to plan and more than a year to fully realize. But if he were in China on the Yangtze River, all he would have to do to see the problems a garbage patch can cause a waterway is walk to the shore. Recent rains in China have washed thousands of tons of garbage toward the locks of the Three Gorges Dam. Their state media said that it is so thick that people can stand on it in some places.

The International Commission for Large Dams held its 78th annual meeting recently in Ha Noi, attracting 800 delegates from 90 countries. Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai made a speech emphasizing dams and hydro-electricity as a way of dealing with water deterioration and climate change. As Indian Council of Power Utilities President C.V.J Varma pointed out, global water consumption is doubling every 20 years and that 1.8 billion people are expected to live in regions of absolute water scarcity, especially in North Africa and the Middle East by 2025. Dams and hydroelectric power, while less of a focus in the United States, are shaping up to be a large issue in Asia and Africa.

As a follow up to Sean’s post on Micro Hydro Essentials, I thought I would share an overview of my system, which has powered my home for over 13 years. We are fortunate to live on rural mountain property in Northern California with a creek that is not seasonal, although the volume of water does drop significantly during the arid months of summer.  The beauty of hydro power is that it produces power 24 hours a day and is not dependent upon weather patterns, such as sun and wind. The drawbacks are having to maintain the system by cleaning the intake and dealing with varying creek flows.
