Tests Confirm Oregon Dogs Died from Toxic Algae

Four Oregon dogs have died from toxic algae found in Elk Creek near its confluence with the Umpqua River. Low flows resulting from drought have caused algae blooms that are toxic to pets, humans, and livestock.  One dog’s cause of death has been confirmed as caused by blue-green algae, leading officials to presume similar causes of death for the other three dogs.

In an extensive series on “toxic waters”, the New York Times has discovered that “more than 50 percent of regulated facilities violated the Clean Water Act (CWA), but enforcement actions against polluters were infrequent.” Hawaii has the greatest number of violators per 100 facilities; Nevada has the least.  Missouri is the state with the least number of enforcements for violations.

Obama Pushes for Clean Water Restoration Act of 2009

The landmark Clean Water Act (CWA) was passed in 1972 intending to protect and clean up all of America’s waterways. Two relatively recent Supreme Court cases have rolled back protection of American waters by narrowing CWA definitions, and the Obama administration would like to restore the act’s original intentions.  Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) has reintroduced legislation to restore CWA called the Clean Water Restoration Act of 2009 (CWRA). Rivers, streams and wetlands that were once protected under CWA would be within the scope of CWRA.  There are twenty-three cosponsors for CWRA demonstrating it has broad support.
