Japanese Whalers Making Big Money on Illegal Whale Meat

The BP oil spill may have killed a baby whale, but there are much bigger problems for endangered whales around the world.
Japanese, Norwegian and Icelandic whalers have been whaling unsustainably and illegally for years despite an international moratorium on whaling. Rather than address this problem with stronger laws and enforcement, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) is discussing lifting the moratorium and replacing it with a whaling quota this week.

Man Swims Across Everest Lake (1Km) for Climate Change Action

There are a lot of ways to try to increase awareness of climate change and action to stop it, but I imagine not many are as noteworthy as this one.
A man given the title “human polar bear” recently swam one kilometer across a lake on Mount Everest for this purpose.

Endangered Whale Massacre on the Horizon?

Here is some very surprising and disappointing news. The Chair of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) announced a proposal this week that would endorse the killing of whales, including some endangered species. The proposal would also allow the killing of whales in their number one feeding ground — the Southern Ocean.
This would reverse a decision made 25 years ago to put a moratorium on whaling.

Mission Accomplished: Katie Spotz is Youngest Woman Ever to Row Solo across the Atlantic Ocean

In an effort, initally, to raise $30,000 for Blue Planet Run, a charity dedicated to providing clean water to those without it, 22 year old Katie Spotz just rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean. It took her 70 days, 5 hours and 22 minutes.
Katie is no stranger to endurance challenges like this. She was the first to swim the entire length of the Allegheny River, has run through the Mojave Desert, and has cycled across the United States, but she says this was definitely her biggest challenge to date.

Every day, 4,000 children in developing countries die from illness and disease related to unsafe drinking water. Clean water for all is an extremely important mission in our world, and a variety of organizations are actively working toward that goal.
