While on the pro tennis circuit, the he had more on his mind than tennis which serendipitously lead to his next career. He became acutely aware of serious water issues regardless of the country in which he was playing. Water supplies were threatened and pollution was posing a serious health threat for millions upon millions.

Pure: A Solar-Powered Water Purifier That Looks Like a Small Animal

It resembles a pet or a small garden pest more than anything else, but the “Pure” system, created by industrial designer Emilian Dan Cartis, is actually a solar-powered water purifier. The system requires almost no upkeep–just put it outside and watch as the device gathers rainwater (or sea water) and turns into potable water suitable for human consumption.

Inexpensive Arsenic Filtration System Uses Cattails, Aquatic Weeds

An environmental and civil engineer has developed an inexpensive arsenic filtration system that uses aquatic plants, namely cattails, to remove poisonous arsenic from drinking water, which could improve the health of millions in countries around the world whose local water supplies are naturally contaminated with the toxic substance. An estimated 57 million people are drinking groundwater with arsenic concentrations measured above the World Health Organization’s standard of 10 parts per billion.

Air Force to Use Dummy Bombs to Fight Groundwater Pollution

The Utah Test & Training Range (UTTR) on Hill Air Force Base (AFB) is a Superfund site, meaning abandoned hazardous waste exists requiring federal authority to clean it up. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are ten areas containing hazardous waste materials at Hill AFB. “In addition, Hill AFB deposited heavy metals and various solutions at Landfill #5 on the Utah Test and Training Range. The Air Force is monitoring this area in accordance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).” The Air Force is doing more than monitoring this site; they are using dummy bombs to clean up the mess.
