Water Index: Quantifying Water Investments

Water is fast becoming a hot topic for every part of society, and in the coming decade, water will require new perspectives, more comprehensive information and innovative action. The World Resources Institute (WRI) is beginning an initiative, along with General Electric (GE) and Goldman Sachs, that will create a Water Index with the goal to accurately identify and measure water risk.

Michigan Sues Illinois Over Asian Carp Invasion

The fight to control the invasion of Asian carp in the Great Lakes is spurring legal battles between Midwestern states. Michigan, with the backing of Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Minnesota, is suing Illinois to prevent the Asian carp from entering Lake Michigan. Not only invasive species but toxic chemicals, urbanization, and climate change threaten the Great Lakes region.

Will Smart Water Grids Become a $16.3 Billion Industry by 2020?

If you read this site you know that water is a major issue and how we relate to and manage our water could be the defining issue of the 21st century. Water innovation is just now starting to build buzz and attract investors, with venture capital still not flush and technologies very much in their infancy. Any discussion of macro-water issues brings up the smart water grid as a necessary but complicated step- but will smart water grids, currently a $530 million market, become a $16.3 Billion industry in the next ten years? A new report from Lux Research thinks it will.

Israelis Develop Water Detection Plane to Combat 12 Billion Gallons of Water Waste

The number is staggering: 12 billion gallons of “non-revenue water” are lost globally each day- that’s over 4 trillion gallons per year. “Non-revenue water” means water that is taken from a water sources but lost to leakage or other inefficiencies at some point in the delivery process and is therefore not used or paid for by the customer. With rising populations and growing water shortages around the world, increasing efficiency and reducing “non-revenue water” is becoming a top priority, and Israel’s Arad Group has created a fly-by monitoring system that aims to do just that.
