CNN Flip Flop: Benefits of Eating PCB Ladened Farmed Fish Outweigh Risks

Farm-raised salmon practices are often criticized by environmentalists because of pollution risks and stock escaping into the wild, but aquaculture may be needed to meet the demand for fish consumption in times of dwindling wild supplies. Recently, CNN health expert Dr. Melina Jampolis rekindled the debate on whether farm-raised salmon is safe for human consumption. Citing a 2003 Environmental Working Group (EWG) study finding high levels of PCBs in farm-raised fish, Jampolis initially recommended people eat aqua farmed fish only once a week, then she flip-flopped on the issue.

$10 million In EPA Grants to Measure Beach Water Quality

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will provide close to $10 million in grants to help monitor beach water quality. The funds will be available to 37 eligible coastal and Great Lakes states, territories and tribes to monitor beach water quality and alert the public to unsafe swimming conditions. The grant program is part of the BEACH Act of 2000, and has enabled states and territories to more than double the number of beaches that are monitored.

Malibu Bans Septic Systems to Protect Surfers

It’s hard to believe a famous city like Malibu, California would still have polluting septic systems. With 21-miles of coastline, Malibu is a favorite spot for surfers and water enthusiasts. The Malibu Surfing Association has led the way in getting the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board to “prohibit the release of pollutants and chemicals into Malibu’s groundwater“.

Tests Confirm Oregon Dogs Died from Toxic Algae

Four Oregon dogs have died from toxic algae found in Elk Creek near its confluence with the Umpqua River. Low flows resulting from drought have caused algae blooms that are toxic to pets, humans, and livestock. One dog’s cause of death has been confirmed as caused by blue-green algae, leading officials to presume similar causes of death for the other three dogs.
