In 1970, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak designed the sulabh sauchalaya (latrines-pour-flush toilet with twin leach pit) and founded what is now the Sulabh Movement. The movement is based on a simple idea that proper sanitation and wastewater management is good for public health and climate change. Green Cross International’s (GCI) mission is “to respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable and secure future.” Founded in 1993 as a merger between former U.S.S.R. President Mikhail Gorbacev’s idea for an organization that would apply the medical emergency response model of the International Committee of the Red Cross to ecological issues and Swiss National Council MP Roland Wiederkehr’s World Green Cross, Green Cross International makes it their business to “Give humanity a chance. Give earth a future.” And that’s exactly what they are giving their first schools in Ghana to be part of the Smart Water for Green Schools project. Beginning in February of 2010 they began their pilot phase with the goal of providing 67 teachers and 1,987 students across 5 communities with hygiene and sanitation education.
