Google’s reef mapping project allows users to take virtual scuba dives along with the Catlin Seaview Survey scientific expedition.
The Catlin project is mapping reefs not only to document them and the amazing diversity of life contained in a reef community, but also to inspire people to protect the reefs. Viewers can experience a coral reef dive without ever getting their feet wet (or spending lots of money on airfare and hotel).
Many coral reefs may not be here in the next century due to ocean acidification and habitat destruction, although with help, some can recover.
Six underwater locations in Australia, the Philippines, and Hawaii are online at Google Ocean.
