June 8 is World Oceans Day. The theme for 2012 is Youth: The Next Wave for Change.
The oceans are important to all of us, even those of us who live far inland. The oceans provide food and other products, transportation routes for international trade, and a chance for relaxation.
On a larger scale, the oceans buffer temperatures (both on a regional scale, along the coasts, and on a global scale) and provide much of the oxygen of the atmosphere.
World Oceans Day has been unofficially celebrated since 1992. In 2009, the United Nations officially declared June 8 World Oceans Day and it has been getting more participation since then.
You can find events near you on the World Oceans Day site. Select a region, then a country from the drop down menu.
