The Elwha River Restoration ends one hundred years of hydropower and restores the river to its natural state.
The Elwha River runs through Olympic National Park. The removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams will restore salmon habitat, enabling salmon to return to historic spawning grounds, which will in turn revitalize the whole ecosystem.
Economically speaking, removing the dams will promote new fisheries and tourism for the area.
The dam removal will take three years and begins on Sep 17, 2011. American Whitewater, American Rivers, and the Hydropower Reform Coalition joined together to produce this video on the Elwha River.
